Special Issue on “Advanced Artificial Intelligence and IoT Frameworks for Smart and Sustainable Urban Ecosystems”
1. Background
The rapid growth of urban populations, increasing environmental challenges, and the demand for efficient public services have accelerated the transformation of traditional cities into smart and sustainable urban ecosystems. Modern cities generate massive volumes of heterogeneous data from IoT devices, sensor networks, surveillance systems, intelligent transportation platforms, smart grids, communication infrastructures, and digital governance systems. However, raw data alone cannot deliver value unless supported by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) frameworks capable of extracting meaningful insights and enabling intelligent decision-making.
Recent advancements in deep learning, neural networks, edge computing, cloud-based AI architectures, digital twins, and distributed learning systems have significantly enhanced the ability of urban infrastructures to become adaptive, predictive, and autonomous. AI-powered IoT frameworks now support intelligent mobility management, energy optimization, environmental monitoring, public safety enhancement, resource allocation, and citizen-centric digital services. These integrated systems form the backbone of next-generation urban ecosystems that aim to be efficient, resilient, sustainable, and technologically advanced.
Despite significant progress, several technical and practical challenges remain, including scalability, interoperability among heterogeneous systems, real-time analytics, security vulnerabilities, privacy preservation, ethical considerations, sustainable computing, and explainability of AI models. There is a pressing need for innovative research that integrates AI and IoT within unified, secure, and sustainable frameworks to address the growing complexity of smart urban environments.
