Abstract

Due to the recent growth of cities and urbanization in Kurdistan region, the necessity for a sophisticated management of solid waste, resulted from different activities and industries such as construction industry is vital. This study aims at assessing the current status of solid waste management, in particular the waste generated by construction industry, in Kurdistan region particularly in Erbil City. The major technique used to conduct and collect primary data from related governmental bodies and stakeholders is questionnaire. The results show that almost in all construction sites in Erbil, landfilling is the only practice used for construction and demolition waste (CDW) management as this is confirmed by 74% of the respondents. The results also show that the main factors due to such management of CDW are cost of recycled materials, lack of tax on landfilling, low quality of recycled materials, availability of recycled materials and lack of awareness of the negative impact of CDW on the environment with ‘agree’ percentages from the respondents of 66%, 70%, 68%, 78% and 76%, respectively
